Public Statement
Saturday. June 25, 2022
On Friday morning, June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned nearly 50 years of precedent protecting the right to access an abortion. We are heartbroken at the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. We firmly believe every person should have the constitutional protection to choose what’s best for them, their body, and their family.
Abortions will remain legal, and a right, in California. However, a person’s right to choose will be determined by state officials and more than 20 states will seek to ban or severely restrict abortions within the next 30 days
This ruling affects not only cis-gendered women, but anyone who can be pregnant, including LGBTQ+ women, transgender men, and nonbinary people. Criminalizing abortions will not stop people from having them. It will limit their access to clean, sterile, and safe environments with clinical professionals, which puts people seeking an abortion at risk. We applaud the countless corporations like Amazon, Apple, Disney, and Levi Strauss & Co. who quickly responded to this injustice by providing abortion-related benefits to employees, and their dependants, who live in states that are restricting or banning abortion access.
Following the overturn, Justice Thomas wrote that the Supreme Court should reconsider rulings that protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriages.
This is a reminder that some personal liberties, especially the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community, should never be taken for granted, and we always need to be vigilant. We won’t stand for this injustice and must fight for what is right. Talk about it, march about it, vote about it, and make sure it is known we will not give up.
