Public Statement on Recent Road Reopening in Qmunity District and Phase 2 of Project

Public input requested via community questionnaire.

Community support for the South Bay’s LGBTQ+ cultural district in downtown San Jose remains strong despite the City of San Jose reopening Post Street to vehicle traffic on January 7th.

Located on Post Street between 1st and Market, the Qmunity District is an affirming place that celebrates the art, culture, and history of the LGBTQ+ community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the District offered an outdoor environment for safe gatherings for everyone. An all-inclusive place for those isolated from other affirming spaces.

In Spring 2020, Project MORE championed the Al Fresco Program closure of Post Street to aid District businesses and those in the LGBTQ+ community who needed a place to safely socialize for their wellbeing. While many businesses, property owners, the community, City of San Jose, and San Jose Downtown Association found the closure successful, we want to improve the closure experience so all guests and stakeholders can benefit. The valuable insight is being used to design a long-term street closure plan for the District.

Project MORE works with all stakeholders to create a vibrant and welcoming place for everyone. In partnership with urban planners, experienced global design firms like Gensler, and organizations like the International Interior Design Association, we are revitalizing and beautifying the District.

With the support of the City of San Jose and the San Jose Downtown Association, Project MORE has established committees with stakeholders and the community to begin Visioning Phase Two of the District. We are seeking input to develop executable plans and standards for the District. We remain focused on public safety while improving guest traffic throughout the week with diverse programming, and invigorating guest experiences with a greater variety of food and beverage, media, retail, and social options.

With your help, the Qmunity District will continue to thrive! Share your input by completing our short online questionnaire. We Are Qmunity!
