RIP Natalia Smüt
Honoring the Memory of Another Individual Lost to Anti-Trans Violence
With sadness and a heavy heart, we share the passing of Natalia Smüt, 24, an Afro-Rican transgender woman of San José who was known best for her motivating and creative spirit, captivating performances, and her love for advocacy within the community.
A beloved drag artist and entertainer of the South Bay, Natalia was senselessly killed on April 23 in Milpitas, California. She is the 16th victim this year of anti-transgender violence this year in the U.S.
Project MORE and the Qmunity District extend their condolences to loved ones, friends, and the community members who knew Natalia and to everyone triggered by this tragic incident.
The senseless violence against transgender and non-binary people in our communities must stop, and more protections and advocacy are needed. We encourage the community to check in with your queer family and friends to show your support and care for their well-being.
In honor of Natalia and other trans lives lost to violence, we will be changing the color of the lights in the Qmunity District to trans flag colors for the next 16 days (beginning April 24) to help draw awareness to this important issue.
A community vigil to honor Natalia will be Saturday, April 24 from 6 to 8 pm at San Jose City Hall. On April 25 Mac’s Club will host a potluck beginning at 2 pm with a campaign toast to Natalia at 5 pm.
Attendees must wear masks and ensure physical distancing for everyone’s wellbeing. They are also encouraged to bring flowers, photos, and mementos to honor Natalia.
