This documentary explores Hollywood’s depiction of trans people on screen over the decades. Trans artists and creators such as Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Mj Rodrigue, and Chaz Bono share their experiences during television and film trans-inclusive moments.
Betty – HBO Max
With New York City as the backdrop, “Betty” follows the lives of a diverse group of freewheeling teenage girls who dare to step into the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding. HBO renewed the series for a second season two weeks after airing its last episode.
Love, Victor – Hulu
This “new” series is a spinoff of the film “Love, Simon.” The story follows the recent relocation of a somewhat conservative family into their new home outside Texas. The story is centered around Victor and the complexities of coming out of the closet as a teenager.
Euphoria – HBO Max
This is a coming of age story about Rue, a teenager played by Emmy nominee Zendaya. Rue is battling with addiction when she meets her friend Jules (Hunter Schafer), a trans teen who is living her life under the pressures of society. The story reveals a glimpse of the struggles younger generations are facing and the things they must do to survive.
Everything’s Gonna Be Okay – Hulu
Navigating autism, budding sexuality, consent, parenthood, adolescence, family, and grief, “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” is a story about a group of young siblings coming together to overcome the recent loss of their father in a peculiar but undoubtedly joyful story.
The Bisexual – coming November 2020 on Hulu
“The Bisexual” explores the complexities and uncertainty around the most overlooked sexual identity in the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Leila is the lead character in this series; she is a thirty-something Iranian American woman living in London who’s identified as a lesbian for most of her life. Recent experiences drive her to realize her sexuality is more complicated than she thought, leading her to make difficult decisions to be at peace with her being.
Transhood – coming September 2020 on HBO
Four families participate in this project filmed over five years in Kansas City. The documentary tells the chronological story of four kids (ages 4, 9, 12, and 15) who are growing up transgender. The film portrays the struggles transgender families often face and the unexpected purpose they discover as they learn to cope with changes in their lives.
